There is no dearth of buzzwords in the world of cosmetics, food and lifestyle, and the words ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ have surfaced more than any others in our parlance. What is key is that they are different, but often wrongly interchangeably used. They have such a massive impact on the cosmetics that you use, that it is integral to understand how organic is different from natural in the make-up that you use or personal care products that are a regular part of your lives.

Organic beauty refers to the formulation of cosmetic products using organically farmed ingredients. These ingredients are grown without the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GM), herbicides, synthetic fertilisers and artificial inclusions. In fact the purest organic products go the extra mile to ensure that they include:

  • NO animal testing
  • NO GM
  • NO controversial chemicals
  • NO parabens and phthalates
  • NO synthetic colours, dyes or fragrances
  • NO nano particles

These products also promise a higher level of oxidants in them. They are sustainably sourced with transparent manufacturing process and biodegradable ingredients. The products also have minimal packaging with maximum recycled content and are inclined to protecting wildlife and biodiversity. Organic products are definitely good for the skin as they are present in the purest form.

The word natural on the other hand has less technical regulations around it, and can have an ambiguous implication on the labelling. They can give the impression of being harmless, but need better reading into it. They key point to note is that an ingredient could be derived naturally, but highly processed and harmful. For example, natural ingredients can also include animal-derived products such as beeswax and minerals. We at tinge, have heavy wax based lipsticks, but none of them are from beeswax.

To recap, here are some points to remember for organics and natural cosmetics:

  1. Natural skincare products have natural ingredients. Organic ingredients do not have herbicides, artificial pesticides, preservatives, sulfates, parabens, synthetic colours or any other chemicals.
  2. Natural products are never tested on animals.
  3. Terms ‘vegan’ and ‘cruelty-free’ are not synonymous to ‘natural’ or ‘organic’
  4. Prices of organic skincare products will be higher

In the absence of clear standardisation of organic and natural products in India, you need to be reading your label and asking more questions before understanding what you’re buying.

At Tinge, we are 100% vegan, natural and cruelty-free. Our products have the purest of ingredients, which are not harmful to the skin in any manner.
